Halo X Smart Glasses Promise Enhanced Intelligence and Infinite Memory, Sparking Privacy Debates

Two former Harvard students are poised to disrupt the wearable technology market with the upcoming launch of Halo X, a pair of "always-on" AI-powered smart glasses designed to continuously listen, record, and transcribe conversations, offering users real-time relevant information. The ambitious project, spearheaded by Halo co-founders AnhPhu Nguyen and Caine Ardayfio, aims to equip wearers with an augmented cognitive experience, effectively providing what Ardayfio describes as "infinite memory."
The core functionality of the Halo X glasses centers on their ability to capture spoken dialogue. This audio is then transcribed by artificial intelligence, creating a searchable record. More significantly, the AI analyzes the ongoing conversation to provide immediate, contextually relevant information. "Our goal is to make glasses that make you super intelligent the moment you put them on," stated Nguyen. This capability is likened by Ardayfio to an "IRL Cluely," referencing a startup that offers AI assistance for various life scenarios, from job interviews to academic challenges. Ardayfio elaborated on the practical applications, explaining that if a complex term is used or a factual question is posed, such as "What’s 37 to the third power?", the answer would instantly appear on the glasses’ display.
Halo has secured $1 million in seed funding to accelerate the development of these advanced smart glasses. The funding round was led by Pillar VC, with participation from notable investors including Soma Capital, Village Global, and Morningside Venture. The Halo X glasses are slated for a retail price of $249 and will open for preorders this Wednesday. Ardayfio has characterized this innovation as "the first real step towards vibe thinking," suggesting a future where human cognition is seamlessly augmented by technology.
The entrepreneurial duo, who famously dropped out of Harvard, have established a presence in the San Francisco Bay Area’s vibrant tech ecosystem, operating out of a space that mirrors the concept of a "Hacker Hostel." Their previous work has already generated significant attention. Last year, they developed a facial-recognition application for Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses. This demonstration, which highlighted the potential for such technology to be used for doxxing individuals, caused a considerable stir and raised substantial privacy concerns. This prior endeavor positions them as potential early competitors to Meta’s own smart glass offerings. Ardayfio suggested that Meta’s caution regarding privacy issues, stemming from past scandals, might hinder its product development, creating an opening for startups like Halo to innovate more aggressively.
"Meta doesn’t have a great reputation for caring about user privacy," Nguyen commented, "and for them to release something that’s always there with you – which obviously brings a ton of utility – is just a huge reputational risk for them that they probably won’t take before a startup does it at scale first." This strategic observation points to a market dynamic where consumer trust, particularly concerning privacy, can be a significant differentiator.
However, the prospect of a discreet, always-on recording device raises immediate questions about user privacy and consent. Unlike Meta’s smart glasses, which feature an external indicator light to signal when their cameras and microphones are active, the Halo X glasses will lack such a visual cue. "For the hardware we’re making, we want it to be discreet, like normal glasses," Ardayfio explained. He further clarified that the glasses will record every word spoken, transcribe it, and then promptly delete the raw audio file. This emphasis on discretion, while enhancing user experience, amplifies concerns about covert recording.
Privacy Advocates Raise Red Flags
The move towards normalizing always-on recording devices in public spaces has drawn sharp criticism from privacy advocacy groups. Eva Galperin, Director of Cybersecurity at the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), expressed significant reservations. "Small and discreet recording devices are not new," Galperin noted. "In some ways, this sounds like a variation on the microphone spy pen. But I think that normalizing the use of an always-on recording device, which in many circumstances would require the user to get the consent of everyone within recording distance, eats away at the expectation of privacy we have for our conversations in all kinds of spaces."
The legal landscape surrounding covert recording is complex and varies by jurisdiction. Several U.S. states have "two-party consent" laws, making it illegal to record conversations without the explicit agreement of all parties involved. When questioned about these regulations, Ardayfio acknowledged their existence but placed the onus on the user to obtain consent. "We trust our users to get consent if they are in a two-party consent state," he stated. This assertion, however, does little to alleviate concerns about the practical enforcement and ethical implications of such a policy.
"I would also be very concerned about where the recorded data is being kept, how it is being stored, and who has access to it," Galperin added, underscoring the critical importance of data security and access controls for any technology that handles sensitive personal information.
Halo states that it utilizes Soniox for its audio transcription services, a company that claims to never store recordings. Nguyen asserted that the finished product will feature end-to-end encryption, though specific details on its implementation were not provided. The company also aims to achieve SOC 2 compliance, an independent audit that validates robust customer data protection practices. A timeline for achieving this certification remains unspecified.
A History of Privacy-Invasive Innovations
The founders’ previous project, I-XRAY, developed while they were still students at Harvard, further underscores their willingness to explore the boundaries of privacy-invasive technology. This demonstration project injected facial recognition capabilities into Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses, revealing how easily such identifying technology could be integrated into consumer devices not designed for it. While the code for I-XRAY was not publicly released, the glasses were tested on unsuspecting individuals without their consent. A demonstration video showcased the glasses rapidly identifying faces and retrieving personal information of strangers, reportedly eliciting distress from those whose data was exposed.
In a prior interview with 404 Media, Nguyen acknowledged the potential dangers associated with such technology, stating, "Some dude could just find some girl’s home address on the train and just follow them home." This candid admission highlights a stark awareness of the risks involved in deploying technologies that can readily compromise personal safety.
Currently, the Halo X glasses are equipped with a display and a microphone but do not include a camera. However, the possibility of integrating camera functionality into future models is reportedly being explored.
Technological Underpinnings and Dependencies
The functionality of the Halo X glasses is not entirely self-contained. Users will need to have their smartphones nearby to power the glasses and receive real-time information prompts and answers to queries. The glasses themselves are manufactured by an undisclosed third-party company and rely on an accompanying mobile application. This app effectively offloads the heavy computational tasks, as the glasses themselves lack the onboard processing power to handle complex AI operations independently.
At the heart of the AI capabilities of the Halo X glasses lie integrations with Google’s Gemini and Perplexity. Gemini is leveraged for its strengths in mathematical calculations and logical reasoning, while Perplexity is used for its ability to efficiently scrape information from the internet. This combination allows the glasses to access and process a vast range of data to provide informed responses.
During an interview, when queried about the release date of the next season of the popular Netflix series "The Witcher," Ardayfio responded with a precise, albeit slightly uncertain, answer reminiscent of a programmed response. He stated, "The Witcher season four will be released on Netflix in 2025, but there’s no exact date yet. Most sources expect it in the second half of 2025." He then added a qualifier, "I don’t know if that’s correct," highlighting the reliance on external data sources and the inherent limitations of AI in guaranteeing absolute factual accuracy.
The launch of Halo X represents a significant step in the evolution of wearable technology, pushing the boundaries of what smart glasses can do.
