Beyond Yoga Steps Up East Coast Expansion With New York City Pop-Up and Performance-Driven Glowzone Launch

The activewear landscape is undergoing a significant transformation, driven by shifting consumer preferences that balance high-performance utility with everyday lifestyle appeal. Beyond Yoga, the California-based activewear brand owned by apparel giant Levi Strauss & Co., is doubling down on its strategic expansion along the East Coast. By planting a temporary yet robust flag in New York City’s bustling Flatiron neighborhood, the brand aims to showcase its most substantial technical innovation to date: the Glowzone fabrication line. Running through early January, the pop-up location serves as a multifaceted experiential hub, featuring exclusive local merchandise, an immersive retail environment, and a dedicated downstairs fitness studio designed to host weekend movement classes.

This latest Big Apple venture marks a strategic evolution from Beyond Yoga’s initial New York City pop-up launched in 2024. While the earlier installation functioned primarily as an upper-funnel brand-engagement exercise under the "Club Beyond" banner, the current Flatiron iteration is built for direct commerce and deep consumer interaction. Featuring a significantly broader array of stock-keeping units (SKUs)—ranging from foundational outerwear and fleece to the newly introduced performance gear—the store provides local consumers with hands-on access to products that previously lived predominantly on digital e-commerce channels.

Chronology of Growth and the Rise of Glowzone

Founded in 2006, Beyond Yoga spent the majority of its operational history establishing itself as a premier destination for ultra-soft yoga wear and athleisure essentials, anchored heavily by its iconic Spacedye fabric. Over the past two decades, however, the brand has navigated shifting market dynamics by broadening its category assortment. While leggings and yoga pants once dictated the vast majority of sales figures, the last two years have seen the brand successfully branch into knitwear, dresses, outerwear, and lifestyle items like puffer jackets and jumpsuits. Notably, lifestyle and hybrid products now drive the majority of the brand’s growth trajectory, reflecting a broader consumer demand for versatile apparel that transitions seamlessly from a workout to daily errands.

The introduction of Glowzone represents a calculated pivot back to technical performance without abandoning the brand’s core ethos. Developed over a rigorous two-year R&D cycle, Glowzone officially launched in July to address a specific gap in the brand’s portfolio. Historically, Beyond Yoga customers relied on the plush, heavier feel of Spacedye for lower-impact activities. However, consumer feedback indicated an escalating demand for a lighter-weight material capable of withstanding high-impact, high-sweat environments such as hot yoga, strength training, running, and cycling.

Engineered with advanced moisture-wicking technology, four-way stretch, and UPF 50+ sun protection, Glowzone offers compressive properties while maintaining a lighter profile than its predecessor. The fabrication has quickly permeated various product categories, powering sports bras, bike shorts, and hybrid straight-leg pants.

Navigating Retail Strategy and Direct-to-Consumer Expansion

Beyond Yoga’s physical retail footprint has expanded dramatically in recent years. Following its acquisition by Levi Strauss & Co., the brand has steadily built out its brick-and-mortar presence. In 2025, Beyond Yoga achieved a major milestone by opening its inaugural East Coast storefront in Connecticut. Today, the brand operates a carefully curated portfolio of physical stores distributed across key states, including California, Arizona, Texas, Washington, Illinois, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Maryland.

Despite maintaining key wholesale partnerships with major retailers like REI, the majority of Beyond Yoga’s revenue is generated through its direct-to-consumer (DTC) channels. Within this digital ecosystem, New York City consistently ranks as one of the brand’s most lucrative e-commerce markets. According to company leadership, establishing a permanent retail footprint in Manhattan remains a primary objective, though management is exercising strategic patience regarding real estate selection.

"You need to be very thoughtful and make sure you have the right space, the right location, all of that," noted Nancy Green, CEO of Beyond Yoga, explaining the deliberate approach to permanent brick-and-mortar expansion in the city. "The pop-up allows us to test the waters in the general area of where we want to be."

Community-Centric Marketing and Experiential Activations

Rather than relying on traditional, top-down advertising campaigns to introduce Glowzone to the market, Beyond Yoga adopted an organic, community-led seeding strategy. The brand partnered closely with fitness influencers and certified ambassadors, providing them with early access to trial the material and generate authentic feedback. This grassroots approach has yielded rapid results, helping establish Glowzone as a primary growth driver alongside the enduring popularity of Spacedye.

This emphasis on community and direct engagement is also woven into the operational DNA of the brand’s leadership. Green maintains a hands-on approach to product development, regularly visiting Beyond Yoga brick-and-mortar locations on Fridays to converse directly with shoppers. By soliciting qualitative feedback regarding customer preferences, missing assortment gaps, and favorite product features, the executive team ensures that pipeline innovations directly mirror consumer desires.

To amplify its physical presence in New York City, Beyond Yoga is preparing to host the East Coast debut of "Seek Beyond: Open Air," its signature outdoor programming series. Building upon the success of the brand’s inaugural activation—a hike and concert held in Los Angeles in March—the upcoming New York event will kick off at the Flatiron pop-up. Participants will gather for a community run and walk along the West Side Highway, culminating at the Edge NYC observation deck. The experiential afternoon will conclude with a live performance by Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Natasha Bedingfield, marrying fitness, culture, and musical entertainment.

Financial Performance and Market Implications

The strategic alignment of technical product innovation, lifestyle diversification, and targeted physical retail expansion is yielding measurable financial returns for the brand’s parent company. For the quarter ending in May, Levi Strauss & Co. reported a 16% year-over-year increase in net revenue for the Beyond Yoga brand. Furthermore, the brand has delivered consecutive quarters of robust double-digit growth throughout the first half of the year on both reported and organic bases, underscoring the viability of its scaling strategy.

From an industry perspective, Beyond Yoga’s trajectory illustrates a broader trend within the global athleisure market: the necessity for established players to bridge the gap between technical performance and everyday lifestyle aesthetics. While legacy athletic brands have historically led with an uncompromising focus on athletic metrics, Beyond Yoga continues to position its technical offerings—such as Glowzone—within a holistic framework centered on mental and physical well-being.

"If you’re in the activewear business, [clothes] have to perform," Green emphasized regarding the brand’s product philosophy. "We do that, but we don’t come to market with this super intense point of view on performance. We come to market with a joyful expression of being active and what movement does for your mental and physical well-being."

As the Flatiron pop-up welcomes consumers through the winter months and the brand continues to evaluate long-term real estate prospects in major metropolitan markets, Beyond Yoga’s calculated blend of experiential retail, customer-informed design, and disciplined physical expansion positions it for sustained momentum within the competitive athleisure sector.
